Germany focuses on sustainability

Barbara Hendricks and Johanna Wanka, respectively minister for environment and minister for education of Germany, delivered a unanimous message about Germany's economy on Monday, proclaiming, "sustainability is our competitive advantage".

At the Green Economy Conference in Berlin, the two ministers and several significant persons from both business and academia discussed recommendations on how Germany's economy could become more sustainable.

Production, consumption and finance were all central to the discussions, with the target being to strengthen Germany as an innovation and technology location.

The five critical recommendations were defined as: tailoring research and innovation towards global sustainability targets, making sustainability more competitive, framing international trade more sustainably, ensuring education on sustainable matters was integral to the economy and raising the profile of the public dialogue on sustainability.

"It is important to understand that sustainability and competitive advantage are not mutually exclusive," said Dr. Benno Bunse, CEO of federal economic development agency Germany Trade & Invest.

"We must never let go of one for the sake of the other. We have set out ambitious aims both with our Energiewende (energy transition) and our industrial strategy of being a centre for global innovation and technology.

"The recommendations are critical areas to focus on, and doing so creates huge investment opportunities across all fields, as we strive to find solutions to help the future become both more prosperous and more friendly to the environment."
