2014: turnover for games apps set to grow by one third

Berlin (gtai) - Turnover for games on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers is forecast to rise to EUR 465 million (USD 623 million) in Germany this year, according to the high-tech association BITKOM citing data from the IHS Technology market research institute.

This would see the total annual turnover for computer and video games rise to an incredible EUR 2.58 billion (USD 3.45 billion) - growth of 1.4 percent on the previous year. Paid-for games that can be downloaded or played online are forecast to generate turnover of EUR 966 million (USD 1.3 billion) in 2014 - a year-on-year rise of 8 percent, the organization reports.

"Computer and video games are more popular in Germany than ever before," says Julia Oentrich, ICT industry expert at Germany Trade & Invest. "The number of gamers in Germany is on the rise with two in five citizens over the age of 14 now playing regularly - the market is booming and mobile devices mean games are reaching new audiences."

Indeed, BITKOM reports that the proportion of German women playing games has grown from 30 to 39 percent since 2013. Amongst men and women, the greatest growth is being seen in the 50-64 age group (23 percent, up from 13 percent in 2013). Furthermore, Germans are playing more often than before with 91 percent of gamers now playing several times a week.
