„Smart Energy“ made by German Mittelstand

Unique power station to open in Kiel

Berlin (gtai) - The city of Kiel is set to host Europe’s most modern and innovative power station from autumn 2018 onwards, one that will lower the CO2 emissions from the city by some 70 per cent. A thermal storage system and electrode boiler are already in place. The next stage of construction is the 20 gas motors, housed in four blocks, which will give the power station its unique flexibility capability.

The motors go from 0-100 per cent load in less than five minutes, which allows the power station to quickly react to spikes and slumps in power demand. The combined heat and power unit either provides heat to the city or stores it in a 60-metre high heat storage unit holding 30,000 m3 of water. The station can supply heat to more than 70,000 customers over an eight-hour period. With natural gas as the primary fuel, the combined efficiencies are a huge step forward for the city to a smarter energy solution. The station took two significant awards during its design phase: a ‘Top-100 Stamp’ as one of Germany’s Mittelstand’s most innovative companies, and the European COGEN Recognition Award last year for market development.

The project is funded by the European Fund for Strategic Investment, which brings together money from private investors and places it into strategically significant projects. “An innovative solution such as this is a perfect example of how Germany’s Mittelstand is pushing ever further back the boundaries of possibility when it comes to business efficiency, carbon emission reduction and intelligent solutions,” said Dr. Benno Bunse, CEO of Germany Trade and Invest, the federal economic development agency. “That such a project is perceived as a strategically important one by a major European investment fund is further testament to that. Germany’s Mittelstand will continue to be a leader in such innovation for years to come.”
