New cancer test: German researchers develop liquid-biopsy procedure

Berlin (GTAI) - A team of researchers led by Andreas Baur at Erlangen University Clinic have come up with a new test that could speed detection of skin cancer. The procedure centers around measuring extracellular vesicles produced by the liver in response to cancer cells in human blood.
Bauer says the new technique represents the “medicine of the future” since it promises to make cancer screening faster and less intrusive for patients.
“One of the challenges is preventing cancer is that the disease can often only be identified after tumors have formed,” says Germany Trade & Invest Chemistry and Health Director Marcus Schmidt. “The new test developed in Erlangen has the potential to better prevention and treatment – and perhaps save lives.” It also shows Germany’s vitality as a location for medical research.
