Wittenberg to be Home to Storage Battery Gigafactory

TESVOLT is undertaking a EUR 30 million expansion in the eastern German city, best known for its role in the Reformation. Could a similar sea change be coming in energy storage?

Ground has been broken on the new production facility, which will cover 6000 square meters and is scheduled to go operational by 2025. Political leaders, including the premier of the regional state of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff, attended the ceremony.

“TESVOLT combines a great sense of responsibility with an immense, entrepreneurial innovation – that’s the basis of the success story it’s written in past years,” Haseloff said. “Now a new chapter is being added. The gigafactory will be a flagship project for our entire state.”

The new factory will increase TESVOLT’s production capacity to 80,000 storage systems a year – ten times the current amount. The facility will be entirely powered by wind and photovoltaics. The company also intends to build an R&D center on the site.

Experts predict that the European storage battery market will grow by 30 percent annually over the next six years. TESVOLT  is a former winner of German Entrepreneur Award and has been twice named most innovative company by the TOP 100 jury.
