Telemedicine in Germany: Challenges, Opportunities and Solutions in a

Developing Market

Over the last five years, the German parliament has passed several laws that promote the digital transformation of healthcare in Germany. This regulatory support – combined with the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic – has increased the demand and supply of telemedicine services. Accordingly, telehealth is set to become an important element in healthcare in Germany. In contrast to other countries, Germany has taken some time to open up the digital health market. For companies already active in the digital health sector, the market in Germany is attractive because they enjoy a “learning-curve-advantage.” However, the legislative foundations for telemedicine in Germany are currently evolving and the reimbursement and certification conditions of such services need to be understood to be successful in the EU’s largest market.

Our session centered around the following questions:

  • What medical treatments are allowed under the existing legislation?
  • What technical (certification) and economic (reimbursement) considerations have to be taken in to account?
  • Which business model and market opportunities are developing?
  • What is the future direction of telemedicine in Germany?

International Markets Insights: Delegations from Portugal, Finland, Netherlands

The German digital health market is the biggest in the European Union and has, thanks to legislative reforms in the past years, opened up for new approaches to delivering health care. The novel possibilities have attracted the attention of companies from other European countries, which are taking advantage of the market opportunities by offering innovative health care solutions and new business models. Therefore, we have a large number of delegations from foreign countries at DMEA 2022.

GTAI has invited members of delegations from Portugal, Finland and the Netherlands to learn more about their ideas and perspectives regarding the German digital health market.

In addition to presenting the GTAI portfolio, the following topics with one representative from each delegation were discussed:

  • short introduction of the delegation
  • current trends in digital health from the delegation countries,
  • points of interests (markets, technology, partners) at DMEA and Germany
  • how to contact delegation participants
