AI and Digital Passports: Germany's Green Hydrogen Revolution
Germany already has one of Europe's most technologically advanced markets for green hydrogen. Now its scientists are harnessing artificial intelligence to make hydrogen (H2) production more efficient, reliable, and transparent. Luc Graré, Chief Strategy Officer at the French hydrogen producer Lhyfe, explains how it works.

Mr. Graré, Lhyfe currently operates four green hydrogen plants in France and Germany, with two more under construction. Why is Germany so central to Lhyfe's growth strategy?
Graré: Germany is one of the most important European markets for green hydrogen. Its National Hydrogen Strategy and associated legislation provide a clear, reliable framework – accelerating permitting processes and generating demand for hydrogen through, for instance, quotas for the transport sector and refineries. The planned hydrogen core network, comprising around 9,700 kilometers of pipelines, will connect industrial off-takers across the country. We are already pursuing projects to link up with this backbone.
Artificial intelligence has been part of your strategy from the outset. Why is Germany so well-suited to combining these two advanced technologies?
Graré: It makes considerable sense in Germany, because the hydrogen market here is far more advanced than in most other countries. Our plant in southern Germany, with a capacity of ten megawatts, is currently the largest commercial green hydrogen facility in the country. AI helps us primarily with managing production and logistics.
What else do you use AI for?
Graré: We deploy AI wherever large volumes of data converge and can sharpen our decision-making. To operate our plants cost-effectively, for example, we use AI-based forecasting models that translate weather data, wind forecasts and customer requirements into operational recommendations for each facility.
What role does AI play in tracking hydrogen?
Graré: Together with the start-up Atmen, we are introducing digital product passports for our hydrogen. For every delivery, we aim to document the renewable sources of the electricity used, the resulting emissions, and the amount of CO₂ saved. This kind of documentation is a prerequisite for corporate sustainability reports, among other things. An exciting market is emerging here – particularly for international providers of AI solutions. Demand will grow steadily for tools that allow hydrogen operators and buyers to map the entire supply chain digitally and meet their reporting obligations.
How can the use of AI be reconciled with the European Union’s stringent safety standards?
Graré: The market environment has changed significantly in recent years. A few years ago, there was considerable hype surrounding hydrogen but few clear rules. The market has since matured, and reliable regulatory frameworks are now in place. That framework gives us a distinct competitive advantage. When we deploy AI solutions that comply with European requirements, it builds trust among our customers – especially in Germany, where sensitivity around data sovereignty runs high.
