Consulting Services, Pre-Feasibility Study for Green Hydrogen Fertilizers in Kenya

Brief description of the Contract:

• In September 2019 KfW has commissioned a scoping study for a potential Green Hydrogen project in Kenya which may be supported by a grant element being made available by BMZ. The study focused on the general setting of a potential hydrogen production in the Olkaria geothermal area and pre-assessed the technology, the market and the possibility to sell (in full or in parts) the hydrogen to a plant which would transform it to ammonia and on to fertilizer which could be sold into the Kenyan agricultural market. The rationale behind the project is to make use of excess power generated by KenGen’s (Kenya Electricity Generating Company Ltd.) plants in the Olkaria area to operate an electrolyzer which would produce hydrogen (H2). The H2 would then be used to produce ammonia (in a respective production facility) which forms the base for the production of fertilizers. Fertilizers are urgently needed to strengthen Kenya’s agricultural sector. To date, any fertilizers used are imported with only a few farms / agricultural producers having access to them.

• Compile a study which thoroughly assesses the project under different implementation options and presents a Pre-Feasibility Study including two Concept Notes as a foundation for the subsequently to be conducted detailed feasibility study / studies which will be required to move ahead with the project implementation
