Germany’s Eastern Trade on the Rise

Economic exchange between Germany and 29 Central and Eastern European countries jumped two percent in the first half of 2025.

Germany’s trade with neighbors to the east increased by EUR 5.4 billion to EUR 275 billion, according to the German Eastern Business Association (OA) initiative, citing data from the Federal Statistical Office.

Trade with Poland was particularly robust, growing by 5.4 percent to set a record of EUR 90 billion. Poland is currently Germany’s fifth largest trading partner behind the US, China, the Netherlands and France. German exports to Poland also exceed those to China.

German trade with the Czech Republic (+3.4 percent) and Croatia (+6.3 percent) also booked significant rises. Trade with Ukraine increased a whopping 30 percent.

“Germany’s trade with the east is providing further momentum for the entire German economy,” said OA Chairwoman Cathrina Claas-Mühlhäuser in a statement.  “Our exports to the region are bucking the trend and registering considerable growth.”
