According to the recently published GreenTech Atlas for Germany, published by the German Environment Agency and consultants Prognos, the sector grew by nearly five percent in terms of gross value added in 2023.
Germany is also innovative, the study noted.
“Between 2010 and 2023, Germany ranked among the top three countries for GreenTech patent filings, accounting for 16.5% of global patents in this sector—just behind the US and Japan,” the authors of the atlas noted.
The study cited projections that “the gross value added of the German GreenTech sector could nearly double by 2045, while the global import market for green technologies may quadruple.” The German sector is well-suited as a linchpin in this development because it is “deeply embedded in global trade networks, with exports valued at €132 billion in 2023.”
The category greentech encompasses everything from alternative energy sources, sustainable construction and electric vehicles to recycling, carbon capture, agriculture and wastewater treatment and purification.
