Renewables “Factory” Taking Shape at Former Coal Mine

The former coal mine at Jänschwalde now provides clean electricity thanks to 230,000 solar modules and 17 wind turbines, both of which are now operational. All told 230 megawatts will be produced annually at the site.

These two clean electricity parks will be joined by Europe’s largest storage battery to form what Leag is calling its “Gigawatt Factory.” Construction is underway. The battery will be able to store the wind- and solar-generated electricity as of 2028.

The battery will have a capacity of four gigawatt hours, enough to power 1.6 million households for four hours.
