Germany Signs Long-Term Gas, Hydrogen Deal with Norway

German state natural gas provider Sefe has contracted ten billion cubic meters a year from Norwegian provider Equinor from 2024 to 2034.

The volume of natural gas in the deal is roughly one third of Germany’s annual industrial needs. The contract has a five-year extension option.

The two sides also agreed to a declaration of intent that will see Germany purchasing hydrogen from Norway as of 2029.

Sefe head Egbert Laege called the agreement a milestone.

“Today we are securing the provision of energy through natural gas, to which there is no alternative at the moment,” Laege said. “At the same time this is a big step forward toward the energy provision of tomorrow and the fulfillment of Sefe’s hydrogen ambitions.”
