Bavaria to Put Half-Billion into Life Science Mega-Campus

The Bavarian government is preparing a massive investment to make the southern German regional state the undisputed European leader in the field.

The money will be invested between 2028 and 2038 in a site at Martinsried near the Bavarian capital, Munich. EUR 361 million of the planned half billion euros will be devoted to a “life science campus” of the Max Planck Society.

“With that we’ll create the most innovative research location in the area of life sciences in Germany and Europe,” said Bavarian state premier Markus Söder in a statement.

Special focuses of the center will include bio-intelligence (the convergence of biology and software and machines), individualized cancer therapy and biochemistry.

“More new start-ups will be created there,” Söder explained, “as well as a computer center to interlock the areas of artificial intelligence and medicine/pharma.”

The Max Planck Society has been active in Martinsried since 1970. The site is currently home to fifty start-ups, including a subsidiary of BioNTech, the German firm that helped create one of the first vaccines against Covid-19.
