R&D Spending in Germany Increases by 3.8 Percent in 2024

Research and development spending in Germany rose by around 3.8 percent to approximately EUR 137.1 billion in 2024 according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office. 

The R&D intensity level expressed in terms of share of GDP ranged between 3.13 percent and 3.7 percent, with the domestic business sector contributing the lion’s share with EUR 92.5 billion of total innovation spending. 

University spending was up 4.7 percent to EUR 24.1 billion, with non-university institutions recording an increase of more than 10 percent to EUR 20.4 billion.

Total research and development expenditure exceeded the European Union three percent of GDP target of but fell just short of Germany’s own stated target of 3.5 percent for the period.
