American IT Giants to Build Munich Supercomputer
Nvidia and Hewlett-Packard Enterprises (HPE) are teaming up to construct the “Blue Lion” high-performance computer.
Jun 11, 2025
Blue Lion will be housed at the Leibniz Supercomputing Center (LRZ) in Garching near the Bavarian capital and will be operational by 2027. Construction and the first years of operation will cost some EUR 250 million.
The Jülich Research Center’s “Jupiter” supercomputer, which has now been officially recognized as the fastest computer in Europe, is based on Nvidia chips.
Blue Lion will use Nvidia’s Vera Rubin chips, which were specially developed for artificial intelligence. Nvidia says that Blue Lion will have 30 times more data processing capacity as the LRZ’s current supercomputer.
