German Gaming Sector Rebounds in First Half of 2025

Numbers are positive as the industry gathers for the annual gamescom trade fair in Cologne.

Turnover in gaming increased by four percent in the first six months of the year, reaching EUR 4.6 billion. That’s according to the German industry association game. The growth, which comes after a brief market dip, was driven by hardware, in which revenues were up 17 percent.

More than half of all Germans play video games at least occasionally, German digital association Bitkom says. Somewhat surprisingly, female gamers play on average 20 minutes more (2.2 versus  1.9 hours) per day than men.

98 percent of gamers make use of consoles, while 88 percent play on smartphones. Less popular, but still significant are laptops (75 percent), tablets (53 percent) and stationary PCs (45 percent).

Gamers’ average age is 39.5 years, 1.3 years older than one year ago, and “grey gamers” are becoming increasingly important. 76 percent of gamers say gaming is for all ages. 76 percent, too play so-called “casual games,” followed by strategy games (68 percent), jump&run games (65 percent), social & messenger games (60 percent) and action games (58 percent).

In its coalition agreement, Germany’s new government has promised to offer “tax incentives” for the domestic gaming industry.
