Historical Game Takes Germany’s Top Industry Award

“The Darkest Files,” which deals with a grim chapter of the past, has been named the best German computer game of 2026.

Berlin development studio Paintbucket Games came out on top at the annual awards ceremony in Munich.  “The Darkest Files” has players attempt to bring Nazi criminals to justice in postwar Germany. It took top honors in both the overall and the “best serious game” categories.

“’The Darkest Files’ succeeds impressively in maintaining the balance between thematic depth and playful lightness,” commented the jury. The game is inspired in part by the story of Fritz Bauer, a Jewish judge who was forced to flee Germany but returned later to prosecute Nazi criminals.

The German Computer Games Prizes are the industry’s leading accolades. They are awarded in 15 categories and carry EUR 800,000 in prize money.
