The groundbreaking ceremony was held in the Bavarian town of Oerlenbach. Among those in attendance were German Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche and Bavarian state premier Markus Söder.
Suedlink is slated to cost around EUR 10 billion and required the moving 8.5 million cubic meters of soil. It will transport electricity, much of it renewably generated, from Germany’s windy north down to the industrial and population centers in south. Its capacity is projected to be enough to supply ten million households with electricity
If all goes to plan, Suedlink will go operational in 2028.
“Ensuring a reliable and affordable supply of clean electricity throughout Germany is key to the resilience of the country’s economic future,” says Germany Trade & Invest Managing Director Achim Hartig. “The Suedlink connection is a major part of that endeavor, so this is a significant milestone.”
