Leading venture capital firms from Europe and the USA, family offices operating on behalf of major investor families (German billionaire twins the Strüngmanns) and other billionaires – including Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates – are allegedly taking a keen interest in the next steps taken by the couple who are set to leave the Mainz biotech company at the end of the year.
BioNTech’s fortunes were transformed from a research-led start-up to a global biotech concern with the development of the first approved mRNA-based vaccine during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Although still in the conceptual phase, discussions with potential investors are reportedly already underway for the project that will most likely concentrate on next-generation mRNA development. BioNTech will also have a contribution-in-kind stake in the planned company as a result of usage rights related to fundamental MRNA patents.
