Bavarian Battery Company Becomes Unicorn

Storage battery specialist CMBlu has achieved a valuation of one billion USD after a successful funding round.

The company has taken in EUR 50 billion in fresh capital to surpass the psychologically important valuation mark.

CMBlu specializes in naturally based alternatives to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

“The financing round is still open, and we remain in contact with further investors,” company head Constantin Eis told business newspaper Handelsblatt. “We’re the largest battery business in the world that doesn’t place its bets on lithium.”

CMBlu is the third German start-up to achieve unicorn status this year after software company Osapiens and AI surveillance platform Dash0. Europe has minted 15 unicorns thus far in 2026.
