The additional money represents a huge increase in state support for nuclear fusion. Previously, some EUR 150 million has been invested in research in the area.
The government’s stated goal is to build the first fusion power plant in the world. The action plan includes eight central measures aimed at accelerating the pace of research and creating “fusion ecosystem” encompassing both academia and private industry.
Fusion hubs are to be established by Q1 2026, and EUR 755 million will be devoted to creating new research infrastructure for laser fusion.
“The past years have shown all too clearly that our energy provision faces challenges,” said German Federal Minister of Research, Technology and Space Dorothee Bär in statement. She also characterized fusion energy as “safe, environmental, climate friendly and affordable for all.”
