According to Bitkom calculations, turnover in the digital economy in Europe’s largest market should reach just over EUR 245 billion this year. The ITC sector is also predicted to add 11,000 jobs. Some 1.35 million people currently work in the sector.
One reason cited for the growth is increased digitalization of machine construction, electronics and the automotive industry. Software turnover is also expected to grow more than ten percent. All in all, the sector is dramatically outperforming the German economy as a whole.
But Bitkom sees potential for even more growth if red tape is cut.
“In times of continuing economic challenges, high costs and geopolitical tensions, the digital economy has proven resilient,” said Bitkom President Ralf Wintergerst in a statement. “The current growth in the market and in employment could be doubled with the right framework. 2026 must be the year of digital policy breakthrough. We have to get away overregulation and bureaucracy and move toward speedy approval processes, pragmatic rules and truly digital administration.”
