The site in the town of Philippsburg also houses a converter for wind-generated energy generated in Northern Germany being built by EnBW’s fellow network provider TransnetBW. The converter is a part of a new direct-current connection called Ultranet.
The EnBW storage battery will have a power output of 400 MwH and a capacity double that, making it one of the largest in Germany.
EnBW says it is realizing the project without any government subisides. Construction will commence in the spring of 2026, and the battery will begin operations in late 2027.
