EU Approves Nine-Figure German Chip Support

The European Union Commission has given the green light to nearly EUR 300 million in assistance for a pair of new semiconductor factories.

The Zeiss company will receive EUR 222 million for a new production facility in the southwestern German town of Oberkochen. Meanwhile Zadient is set to get EUR 66 million for a factory in the eastern German city of Bitterfeld.

The Bitterfeld plant will make microchips using a new procedure that employs ultra-pure silicon carbide.

In approving the state assistance, the EU deemed both projects to be conducive to bolstering European autonomy in the semiconductor value chain.
